As someone who uses the continental systems, I am appalled at the blatant rip off that is the UK rail system. We should not be advising how to get round the usurious charges, we should be taking action to ensure rail fares are brought into line with every other European Country. I recently booked from London to Portsmouth Harbour via Brighton at a total cost of £4..!!! This was the RETURN FARE !!!!
